The ability to effectively respond to and recover from a disaster is the hallmark of business continuity, disaster recovery, and emergency management. This award recognizes an organization that has demonstrated the capability to meet the challenges presented by a disaster, not only to the organization itself but also to the community it serves.
This award honours the resilience and dedication of the Municipality of Jasper staff, who, even while facing their own personal challenges from the wildfire, have demonstrated incredible adaptability as they have worked to stabilize and restore the platform that will allow our community to recover, rebuild, and ultimately thrive. Their professionalism and empathy have been evident in every step of this journey, and are what will make Jasper’s recovery possible. Bill Given, CAO
In July 2024, Jasper faced the largest wildfire in over a century, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 25,000 residents and the loss of around 30% of the town’s structures. The Municipality of Jasper demonstrated outstanding leadership and resilience, maintaining essential services such as water, wastewater, emergency response, and communications through the activation of its Business Continuity Plans.
Staff were redeployed, facilities adapted, and critical operations continued despite widespread disruption. A phased re-entry plan ensured residents returned safely, while recovery efforts—including temporary housing, mental health supports, and restoration of municipal services—were coordinated efficiently.
Jasper’s response showcased the strength of emergency planning, community collaboration, and adaptable continuity strategies, protecting lives, infrastructure, and the wellbeing of both residents and employees throughout the crisis and recovery.
